A Glanville resident witnessed a strange orange coloured object from his back yard. The following was reported...

"I had just gone out the back door to take our two small dogs outside, when I glanced up at the sky and saw an object which appeared to be the size of a football. It was travelling in a west to east direction in a straight line. The object then accelerated and as it did so, appeared to increase in size until it resembled a full moon. It was glowing a fiery orange colour, and appeared to leave a trail of flame behind it. I am sure that the sighting was not of an aeroplane or a satellite. There were no lights visible inside the object."

Whilst driving along the South Eastern Freeway through the Adelaide Hills, James Danvers sighted a pale yellow object shooting across the sky in front of him, just before it disappeared behind a hill. The object was reported as having a cone-shaped tail trailing it and bright lights within as it headed in a north-easterly direction. Mr Danvers said that he found it difficult to estimate the object's distance from the ground in the darkness, but it appeared to be much lower than other space objects which he had seen, appearing parallel with the horizon. The total duration of the sighting was approximately fifteen seconds.

A 59 year old man reported seeing three 'light' coloured objects flying in formation whilst he was working on a road site between Aldgate and Stirling in the Adelaide Hills. The sighting occurred at 11.30am and the weather conditions were fine and sunny. The three round oval-shaped objects were flying in a north-easterly direction and were reported to have been approximately two to three miles from the observer, and had no noise or smoke associated with their flight. They disappeared from view by flying directly into the rays of the sun.

On this night, a family who live in a north-western suburb of Adelaide, heard an unusual sound which caused them to contact AIUFOFSR Society. The time of the incident was between 9.30 and 10pm. Weather conditions at the time were mild and 'still'.

"After hearing the noise, we all commented on the attitude and alertness of our dog. He sat up, ears pricked, and looked straight at the front door. He only does this when he knows that something is outside. The dog was shaking for at least ten to fifteen minutes after the noise was heard. Over the weekend, we took particular notice of our dog with plane noises and any other noises, and when he was lying down or sitting, he didn't even move his head. It appears that the frequency of the noise that he heard, was above that of any general noise.

The house, at the time, was in complete quietness, with no television, radio, etc.. The reason that we decided to fill out the form and to contact the society, was because, without my knowledge until Friday afternoon, the paper stated that a mystery object was sighted on Thursday night and the time stated in the paper corresponds with the time that we heard the 'more than strange' noise."

Miss J Witter witnessed a series of sightings around the 11th February. The following is her account of what happened...

"The object was very bright and it was present at approximately the same time every night for about four days. When we first saw it, at a glance, it looked like a shooting star, but when we saw the size, and saw that it just stayed up there, we looked through a telescope and were able to see, very clearly, a blue ring around the outside of the object. Whenever it moved, it decreased slightly in size, then became large again. On one night, it went down until it was below the houses and we could no longer see it.

This is when it could have landed somewhere. The change in size was not caused by clouds passing, because we could see it decreasing in size as we watched it."

"I went down to turn the front sprinkler off, and as I was coming back, I stopped before I went in the back door and looked up into the sky. Suddenly between two clouds an object appeared. It seemed to be round in shape and had a pale yellow light around it, with a red tail. It was only visible for about three seconds before it disappeared behind another cloud. The object appeared to be at a level height as it travelled away from me. It was a very still, hot night, and the object moved very quickly through the sky."

A 19 year old bank officer, Debra O'Neil, reported seeing a brilliant white, round object, as she stood on her front verandah. The object, flashing spontaneously, seemed to be at approximately 100o from the ground and then dropped to about 50o before disappearing to the north behind trees.

Five people witnessed the sighting at 11.10pm which lasted for about five minutes. Miss O'Neil added to her official report that the object looked like an 'extra large flashing star', which she was unable to see between flashes. As the object moved from E to N, it seemed to lose altitude. It appeared further away than at first, and disappeared from view behind some trees.

Miss O'Neil later added...

"The sighting excited me as I believe in other forms of life, and often stare at the skies."

Jeffrey Colwell, an unemployed graduate, with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Psychology, reported seeing three objects. Mr Colwell said that the three objects, which were round in shape, were a very faint orange-white colour and appeared directly overhead at approximately 1-2000 feet. The time of the sighting was 12.05am and the objects had a perfectly straight flight path, with absolutely precise formation from the first moment that they were sighted.

"They covered five miles in four seconds as I viewed them from behind. My enquiries revealed that it may have been a Mystere aircraft, but for this to be so, such an aircraft would have to have three lights visible from behind. The formation was so precise - an equilateral triangle - that my first thoughts were that it was not a common aircraft with three lights, but three unknown objects. I felt that I was seeing something unknown, but my mind is still open about it. The objects were about the size of a small car as they faded over the city lights."

The total duration of this sighting was four seconds.

Peter Manley (17), Neil Chesher (17), and Sue Kelly (17), all of Redcliffe were driving home from Burpengary. Soon after leaving the freeway, Sue noticed a bright white light almost directly ahead, between ten and thirty degrees above the horizon. It appeared to be a fair distance away, and was moving towards their right. Sue brought this to the attention of Peter and Neil, who at first considered it to be a plane or a meteorite. However, they continued to watch it as they drove. It's initial flight path was horizontal but it's final path appeared to slope downwards towards the horizon. Halfway along it's journey, it's apparent position came close to the apparent position of a plane coming in to land at Brisbane Airport. All witnesses agreed that the object was both brighter (in apparent brilliance) and farther away than the airplane. The unknown had moved to well behind directed right by the time the three youths reached the Chesher residence in Anzac Avenue. It had been visible for the entire journey, a travelling time of between five and ten minutes. However the unknown was out of sight before Mr and Mrs Chesher came outside to see it. It had apparently dropped below the horizon. Peter and Neil thought that the light had remained a constant luminosity throughout it's voyage, while Sue thought that it had exhibited a slow pulsation (2-3 second cycle time).

Wayne Madden, in the company of a friend, sighted a dull yellow coloured object in the vicinity of the Happy Valley Reservoir. The oval-shaped object appeared to be at a distance of an eighth of a mile away, at an approximate altitude of 200 feet.

Mr Madden reported that the object appeared from the east and travelled to the west at a slow speed at one level, then dropped altitude, tilted to a 30o angle without changing direction. He then jumped from the car to listen for sounds, such as jet engines, but there was 'dead silence'. On seeing the object, he pointed it out to his friend who asked what it was, then realized what it was as it became more clearly visible. The object then disappeared from view behind some trees. Both observers were shocked by the sighting.

A Security Agent witnessed some strange manoeuvres made by an oval-shaped object as he left his office at about 7.30pm. His report of the sighting is as follows...

"Upon leaving office, sighted object from car. At first thought it was Venus, but size was far too large and also more brilliant, like landing lights on aircraft, but object was stationary. I then lost sight of it but saw it again a few minutes later when I arrived home, but its position had changed. It then moved to the left, returned and started a pendulum movement. I took binoculars from car and observed that it was oval-shaped on the bottom, flat on top.

At one stage it appeared to fade, then became brilliant again. I returned to the house, but when I came out again, the object had disappeared. I felt puzzled at first, but accepted the fact that it could have been a UFO. I was quite calm and rather pleased with having the experience."

The object was reported to the white and slightly yellow around its rim. The total duration of the sighting was approximately six minutes.

Two Camperdown men sighted an unidentified flying object last week. They believe it was similar to the one reported by Warrnambool residents last Wednesday evening.

Mr Peter Leishman said that he and Mr Graeme Brown noted a long thin white cigar shaped cloud about 5.15pm on Wednesday.

"It caught our attention because it didn't change shape and because it was too regular to be a cloud",

Mr Leishman said.

"It was like a thick white line, slightly thicker in the middle and black at the nose end. It was travelling very slowly across the skyline in the opposite direction to the clouds".

Mr Leishman said that the object, which didn't appear to have wings, had no flashing lights and did not change colour.

Department of Transport (DOT) and RAAF officials said there were no aircraft in the area at that time. The object was seen to travel north and then east for about twenty minutes before it disappeared.

Mrs Margaret Lowe of Wangoom Road said she first saw the object from her kitchen window.

Another call came from Graham Kelly of Caramut Road who said the object appeared to be red and glowing with a tail. Mr Kelly said he thought it was a slim cloud reflecting the setting sun's light when he first looked. After a later check with binoculars, he said it looked like a plane.

Mark Lee and his girlfriend Kerrie Henderson were driving along the Gun Club Road when they saw the object at 5.45pm.

"We got out of the car and stood watching it for about fifteen or twenty minutes. It didn't move for about five minutes, then it flattened out and went yellow. There was a red ring around it".

Mark said the object then moved slowly off towards Mortlake.

"The lights went out and all that was left was a vapor trail but we could still see a black, flat object. It was hard to tell how high it was flying but it seemed to be stationed over Dooley's Hill".

In the Skiddow area Mrs Bruce Hill saw it and described the object having a black dot on the front and back and as she watched it to the north the object turned around. Carol Wickenton of Panmure described it as very bright with a long tail behind it.

Milk tanker driver Bob Wallace of Killarney was driving at Dennington when he saw the object. He said it looked to be coming from the south and was a black dot first.

"It headed towards Koroit, then veered off. I thought it was a plane but it was a yellow glow and when that went, it was a black dot with a tail".

The RAAF duty officer said: "There was no noticeable trace on radar but that could have been because it was flying too low".

....A meteorology bureau information officer said yesterday the different colours of the object described in reports could have been caused by a red haze as the sun sets. He said that sunlight reflecting through the haze layer could have shown red, orange or yellow.

Planetarium lecturer at the Victorian Science Museum, Mr Dave Marshall, said Saturn would be the most visible planet in the area of the UFO reports and would have been yellow. WARRNAMBOOL PHOTOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS
COMPUTER IMAGE ENHANCEMENT
A lone B & W photograph of an unidentified object (UO) was submitted to GSW for analysis by Paul Norman, Vice-President of UFOR(VIC), Australia. The daylight photograph contains an inarticulate image and an exhaust protuberance with only sparse foreground data. The photograph is extremely noisy (grainy) due to its enlarged size and the high speed film (Tri-X). Since the UO was possible observed by numerous witnesses in different locations, according to written transcript, the photograph is a good candidate for computer analysis. All major modes of computer enhancement were utilized during the interpretation including: digitizing, colour contouring, spatial filtering and distance factoring. The following conclusions were obtained from the single photograph.

1) The UO image is not a hoax. There is no photographic evidence to establish any manipulation of the picture.

2) The UO image is not connected with any astronomical body. Nor is the image any known type of rare atmospheric or weather phenomenon.

3) A 135mm telephoto lens, when used in concert with a 2x tele-converter will photograph approximately ten degrees of the sky.

4) The photographer used a small aperture lens opening, probably F16 to F22, which accounts for the extreme depth of field. Example: An F16 setting can effectively photograph foreground images as close as four metres, as well as distant images, and still have both images in good (sharp) focus.

5) The UO image is reflecting sunlight, both the body of the object and the contrail. Additionally, the UO image is in effect being back-lighted due to the position of the sun. Based on the direction of the sunlight * and the sighting (location) data, it is safe to conclude that the photograph was taken between 5.30pm and 6.30pm local time.

NOTE: * The data was calculated from the azimuth of the sun.

6) Assuming that the UO photograph was not cropped, then the picture width represents ten degrees (.17450 Radians) of arc. The size of the UO with the contrail is approximately 1/6th of the total width or 1.7 degrees. The main body portion of the UO image is much smaller.

7) By using special filtering techniques it is possible to isolate this main body from the contrail and reveal that the contrail is being emitted from below the UO.

8) The shape of the UO is definitely elliptical with what appears to be a vertical stabilizer at the rear portion of the image.

9) When performing the technique of density slicing, we were able to count over fifty separate density (grey

10) The aspect ratio (the ratio of width to height) was measured with a video micrometer. This ratio measurement is seven to one.

Example: If the UO is twenty feet long then it is approximately three feet high (thick).

11) The UO is at a vast distance and altitude from the photographer. Measurements based on pixel (picture cell) factoring reveal an altitude of at least 30000 feet (9.4kms). It should be noted that due to the grainy structure of the film that this figure is most likely conservative and in reality the UO is probably over 50000 feet (14.5kms). The grainy structure of the film tends to make quantifiable measurements.

12) The actual size of the UO, void of the contrail, has a physical size close to that of most high altitude (weather or reconnaissance) aircraft.

13) The UO is at a vast distance from the photographer, however, due to a lack of additional sky features and the condition of the film an absolute measurement is impossible.

CONCLUSIONS:
Based on the photographic data it is the conclusion of GSW that the image represents a high-altitude military aircraft. The following facts tend to support his finding:

A. The shape of the UO, is constant to that of an aircraft with a high vertical stabilizer.

B. The size of the UO is also constant to that of common aircraft.

C. Contrails, which are reflecting a setting sun, can be visible for over fifteen minutes.

D. The empirical observations of 'hovering' and/or 'standing still for over five minutes' could be attributed to the heading of the UO slightly angled from the witness.

This has in the past, confused many witnesses of this type of observation. The possibility of the UO representing an extra-ordinary flying craft should not be dismissed; however, additional sighting data and photographs must be obtained to substantiate its claim.

A TAA DC-9 Flight 534 enroute from Cairns to Gove to Darwin sighted an unusual object travelling far above the jet towards the north. When the DC-9 Jet was at a position 120 miles (193kms) NW of Cairns and flying at 30000ft, the pilot sighted an object with a similar trajectory as the aircraft (i.e. NW heading). It was in sight for approximately five minutes until the object was eventually lost in the distance, heading towards the Gulf of Carpentaria. The object was estimated as being 20,000ft above the aircraft, making the altitude of the UO (approx) 50,000ft. At the time of sighting, the position of the jet was approximately over the area of Strathallan or Strathleven Stations (near Palmer R.) on the Domestic Route "AVOCADO" app. magnetic track - NW. 286. The nearest international route is north at a 316 heading NW.

The DOT FSO (Flight Service Officer) in contact with the aircraft, then checked with civil and military traffic movements and found no other traffic in the area.

NOTE: FSO said that he had called the RAAF (presumably Garbutt, TSV) who also checked with the US Embassy Aust. in relation to flights of B-52 Bombers over N.Q., there were apparently no US flights at that time.

After the object disappeared, and the pilot (Captain Willinczyck) was notified of the nil traffic situation, the FSO requested further details of the UO but the pilot 'sounded disinterested' at this point and did not supply further details. The description of the object, as given by the pilot to the FSO during the sighting, was 'Seen only as a dark dot with a distinctive contrail behind, heading NW'. The pilot could not make out any aircraft shape.

The RAAF were apparently alerted to the event. However, it appeared that following the pilot's disinterest in filing a report, investigations were ceased. Upon the data available, there appears to be three possible explanations to account for the sighting made by the TAA pilot.

1) Possible that the object was an aircraft in the area without the permission of the civil or military authorities.

2) Possible that the object was a meteorite with contrail on similar track as the TAA flight.

3) Possible that the object was an unknown.

Although the object appears more likely to have been an aircraft, there is no evidence to support this explanation. The object could not be identified by either the DOT or the pilot and no satisfactory explanation has emerged from inquiries into the incident. The object must be assumed as a possible UFO.

Although no sighting occured, two people had a very mysterious incident in this area.

My girlfriend and I (she was driving) were driving up Brown Hill Creek Road past the Caravan Park. As we crossed the bridge the whole atmosphere seemed to change and we became uneasy and nauseous, and I was virtually terrified at this moment. (My girlfriend said later that she also was terrified). She did a U-turn, stopped the car, demanded that I get out and drive, but made no attempt to get out of the car. I refused to get out of the car because I had a terrible feeling that if I did, it would be the last thing I ever did, I would disappear, or something terrible would happen. We quickly drove back over the bridge, and everything was alright again."

30th SEPT; SALE, VIC 0100-0150hrs (CE2)
Source: The Australian UFO Bulletin December 1980 Edition
Location: 19 kilometres due west of Sale, Victoria, on the Princes Highway. A cattle grazing property of approximately 500 acres called "White-Acres".

Mr Blackwell awoke from his sleep to the noise of his horse galloping around the paddock in panic, the bellowing of cattle nearby and an unusual whistling sound. Glancing at his bedside clock - 1am - he arose in haste and went to the back porch to investigate the commotion. Being unable to view the horse from the porch due to a small shed, Mr Blackwell climbed onto the top porch rail to view the animal. Immediately his attention was drawn to an object flying low from a south westerly direction just below a clump of trees. The object was approximately 550ft from the porch. Mr Blackwell estimated the object to be 6ft off the ground. The object was producing a low whistling sound and emitted blue and orange lights. Mr Blackwell's thoughts were in his own words

"Oh my God it's an aircraft crashing".

He then stood there stunned watching the object. As it cleared the trees he realized the object was domed shaped, not an aircraft and like nothing he had ever witnessed before. He estimated it to be ten feet in height and twenty-six feet in length. The object proceeded in a straight line passing over fences and touched down fifty feet from a concrete water tank 1/4 mile from the house. Mr Blackwell returned to the bedroom, changed clothes, jumped on his motor bike and drove towards the site where the object had landed. On arriving at a closed gate he alighted from his bike and nervously opened the gate while still observing the object. The object was stationary on the ground, the whistling sound continued and orange and blue lights were slowly revolving. The lights were ten feet apart and approx. seven inches in diameter. The object in the light of the moon was bell shaped, coloured orange with a white dome on top. After approx. ten minutes the object started to lift off and Mr Blackwell mounted his bike and drove directly towards it. When fifty yards from the object the whistling noise increased in pitch like a jet engine in reverse. The noise was ear piercing as the object raised slowly into the air giving off a blast of heat. As the bike was on a slight slope its headlight picked up the bottom of the object as it rose. Mr Blackwell noticed a large circular rim on the bottom similar to a hovercraft tube. This rim receded in width as the craft rose. Suddenly the suction reduced in the lift off as did the high pitched noise and stones and cow pads fell from below the craft. The craft flew in an easterly direction slowly gaining height and Mr Blackwell observed it until it disappeared from eye sight. On returning to the house the time was 1.50am. Weather Conditions: a clear star studded sky, calm, no wind with a full moon.

RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATION:
The principal witness was notably shaken by the experience and developed headaches at 11am that morning. Headaches were not a normal thing for the witness. He did feel tired but also had trouble sleeping. No eye trouble had developed. The physical evidence on the ground consisted of a circular brown ring fourteen inches wide around the circumference with a diameter of approx. thirty feet. There were six evenly spaced half spokes pointing inwards towards the centre of the circle which had not turned brown. No radiation was evident and soil samples were taken. The magnetic field in the area was normal. The grass, cape weed and clover was not burnt but appeared to have been poisoned creating the brown effect. The 10,000 gallon water tank nearby was nearly empty to the amazement of the witness and the owner. No explanation could be found for this. The stock on the property would not go anywhere near the circle. It was even impossible to force them into the paddock where the circle was. There was a distinct line of rocks and cow pads lying on the ground in an easterly line from the circle. On examining these it was found they had been uprooted from another place probably the centre of the circle. A time discrepancy of approx. twenty minutes was discovered in the witnesses' statement; not all the details can be produced in this report as in all such cases we must respect the personal feelings and wishes of any witnesses.

The only other witness to be found was young Kelly Postle from the Kilmany General Store approx. four kilometres away. Miss Postle stated that at 12.12am the same morning she saw from her bedroom window a pink ball of fire moving slowly in the west just under the Southern Cross. The sighting has been reported to the RAAF base at Sale and Flight Lieutenant Philip who handles the UAS reports will investigate.

NOTE: On a return visit on 31st Oct., Mr Blackwell recalled the object actually hovered over the tank before touching down. Pat Gildea

"At the above time I went out to the rear of my house in Ayr, North Qld. There I saw a pulsating red light, as big as a golf all, in the sky above me. It was travelling NW to SE., at first I thought it was a plane. Then I realized that it wasn't a plane because there was no sound or flashing white light with this object, also it was moving too slow. I connected up my spotlight and flashed it in the direction of the light. My spotlight is twelve volt, it is connected to a fifteen volt intermittent electric train transformer run from the mains power supply. In having the spotlight set up this way, after ten seconds it goes on off-on-off and keeps going like this until the switch on the back is turned off. The red light continued travelling very slowly across the sky then went out, with three quick flashes, the red light pulsated three times in answer to my signal. I did this four times and each time it flashed back, then it returned to it's original pattern moving slowly to the South East. When it had moved some distance it did a ninety degree turn and headed East. After a few minutes the light went out again, all this time I had the spotlight pointed in it's direction. I immediately repeated the same procedure as before and obtained the same result. This time the object only answered me three times then would not answer me any more. Thinking it may return I kept watching the spot where it disappeared, then, way over to the right of this spot I was watching, it reappeared, stationary and pulsating. I immediately positioned the spotlight in it's direction and in doing so it moved off in an Easterly direction very slowly. I continued to flash this object until it went out of sight behind some houses. The time duration for all of this was about forty-five minutes. My thirteen year old son is a witness to all of this taking place. Below is a sketch of the sighting and the way it was travelling.

The RAAF is baffled by four mysterious unidentified flying objects seen over Perth and tracked by radar. A Macchi jet was scrambled by the RAAF after the UFOs were sighted, but the pilot could not find them. The UFOs were first seen on Thursday by Mr Graham Moyle, an air traffic controller at Perth Airport. He and other air traffic controllers made two or three visual sightings between 8am and 11am. The regional director of transport, Mr Ellis Keil, said that the silver tumbling discs were tracked on radar at a height of more than 8000mtrs until they disappeared at more than 20000mtrs. There were no aircraft or weather balloons in the area to explain the sightings.

Danielle Russell, 12, of Jennings Way, Lockridge, saw four objects moving quickly across the sky from north to south about 11am. She said:

"When I first saw them through the lounge room window I thought they were birds or a plane. They were changing colour from red, blue and green".

However, the UFO mystery may never be solved. The RAAF, which is handling the investigation, is concerned only with establishing that there were no aircraft or obvious objects such as weather balloons in its air space. One RAAF spokesman said that the atmospheric conditions were unusual on Thursday and this could have accounted for the sightings. He said the sudden onset of hot weather could have produced an atmospheric phenomenon.
