Online UFO Report. Reported 16.10.06

Greg was driving due west to work at about 7 am in mid winter. The sun was just rising. It was a sparkling clear sky and visibility was unlimited. He saw straight ahead a large rectangular object illuminated by the rising sun. He immediately realised it was not like anything you would expect to see in the sky. He got to work a minute or so later and the object was clearly visible. He stood and watched it for several minutes. It was huge.  He quickly ruled out all the normal flying objects as he has a thorough knowledge of aircraft and spacecraft and this object was nothing that could be categorised. It was bordering on massive in size. It was probably two to three kilometres west of Greg and was quite an impressive sight hanging in the sky. It seemed to almost defy gravity.

He said: “In the years since the sighting I have often pondered on what it was. I have since formed the opinion that it probably wasn’t a flying object at all but more likely a hole. The way it reacted to the sunlight and its general appearance looked just like a large dark rectangular hole in the blue sky. At the time I assumed it must be a flying object because that’s all we EXPECT to see in the sky. But it wasn’t really flying; it was just hanging there. It was amazing.” The object was very large, about twice the size of a 747. It was the shape of a shoebox but the corners of the box were not sharp but kind of softened or slightly rounded. It lacked colour however. Although the rising sun was falling directly on the object there was no reflection as such. If fact he got the distinct impression it was absorbing the sunlight. It was a dull gun metal grey, almost black. It at first appeared to be totally stationary, but as Greg watched he realised it was drifting very slowly when referenced to objects in the foreground. It was only moving at a walking pace, barely noticeable at first. It was very quiet at this time of the morning with no one about. It was totally silent. It had no obvious propulsion system or wings; nothing that would identify it as being able to fly.

At approximately 8.15pm a Sergeant with the Innisfail Police driving west across Old Johnston River bridge observed two bright light sources in the sky to the west at 45 degrees elevation, spaced approximately 10 degrees vertically apart, the top light was white and bottom red in colour.

They appeared to be above the Innisfail Township CBD.

The stationary lights were obscured from his view as he drove towards the station. After entering the Police Station the sergeant received a phone call at approximately 8.17pm from a Sundown resident (approx. 5km north) reporting two bright orange lights travelling north-northwest at speed of an aircraft.

At approximately 8.14pm two female witnesses and a 13 year old girl observed two bright lights stationary above the Innisfail Hospital, after a few minutes the witnesses observed the lights travel towards the north (Sundown).

The three male witnesses at Sundown observed the lights approach from the south, passing them at approximately 45 degrees elevation and an estimated 500ft altitude and 30kph speed. The objects moved in tandem heading north, approaching the district of Babinda Township. The objects, still in synchronized flight, turned northwest and slowly disappeared from view. Two Sundown witnesses viewed the objects through a 200mm zoom lens, which showed them to be made up of four orange lights connected. No normal configuration of an air navigation lights were observed. Several other witnesses also observed the lights above Innisfail. Russell Boundy UFORFNQ

23.06.97 OFF POINT HIBBS (nr.BIRD ISLAND), TAS 2130hrs (CE1)

Point Hibbs on Tasmania's West Coast is a very lonely spot frequented only by fishermen and the odd bush walker. J and his father had anchored for the night close in the shelter of Bird Island, a small island just south of Point Hibbs. J was on deck when he first spotted a group of three lights out to the west at about a 20 degree elevation. The top light was red with two green lights below. Around the lights was a glowing area of light. Altogether the lights covered an area of about a 3/4 moon. J called his father up to see the lights which were watched off and on by the witnesses for the next couple of hours.

The lights lost elevation during the period they were under observation and moved more to the north. At various times erratic movement was noted by J. The lights looked to move sideways, then performed a large anti-clockwise circle a number of times. Whilst moving on one circle the lights suddenly shot across from the one o'clock position to the 7 o'clock position.

Eventually the lights were low on the horizon, they moved down behind the hump on the island then back up again on a number of occasions before being finally lost from sight.

A second report came to the Centre's attention following publicity on the burn-up over Bass Strait on June 24th.

Mrs B of Lachlan was home alone at 7.30pm on the evening of June 24th. She was in the kitchen and noticed a bright light source on the kitchen blinds. Looking out she was puzzled by a large circle of light seemingly at ground level some 200/300m to the east of the house. The light circle was in a paddock at a higher elevation above the house. Mrs B could see the fence posts in front of the light which placed it in front of the trees at the other end of the paddock. She went outside for a better view but could not see any marks on the circle or hear any sound. The bright white light did not seem to reflect onto any of the nearby trees. She looked out soon after but the light had disappeared. A search of the area failed to locate any marks or explanation for the source of the light.
