NEWSLETTER SEVEN Pt.1     NOVEMBER 2003

Federal Government document search update:

RAAF Policy file:

Work continues on summarising the contents of files located in the National Australian Archives. This issue presents file A703 554/1/30 titled “Investigation of Flying Saucers Policy” which covers the time period 1953-1967 (see attachment one.)

Although this file commences in November 1953, there are some glimpses into the earlier years. Of particular interest is a Memo dated 16 November 1953 which forwards a new report form for the gathering of details about “flying saucer” sightings. The memo reveals that the original pro forma was issued on 17 January 1951. However, the relevant RAAF file for this era has not been sighted by any researchers to date.  Elsewhere on file 554/1/30 we do find a clue to the identifying number of these earlier files, when a memo dated 24 October 1966 reveals that there are four files on the subject 569/5/461; 2/25/1; 574/3/88 and 554/1/30. Three of these files were classified. A request has been submitted to the National Archives for assistance in locating these earlier files.

The file reveals that there was an extensive correspondence between civilian UFO groups and the RAAF about both RAAF policy, and seeking explanations from the RAAF for some of the spectacular sightings which have occurred in Australia. Of particular note is correspondence from Fred Stone of the Australian Flying Saucer Research Society in Adelaide, and Peter Norris of both the Victorian Flying Saucer Research Society and CAPIO.

ASIO files:

As mentioned in Newsletter 4, we found it of interest that the Commonwealth Investigation Service, the forerunner to ASIO, had a file on the Australian Flying Saucer Research Society, in 1956.

In order to ascertain if there are files held on other civilian UFO organisations and individuals we have now completed submitting requests, under section 40 of the Archives Act. These requests have asked ASIO to search their files to see if they hold any records on the following:

Australian Flying Saucer Bureau; Australian Flying Saucer Club; Australian Flying Saucer Investigation Committee; Australian Flying Saucer Research Society; UFO Investigation Centre; Victorian Flying Saucer Research Society; Victorian UFO Research Society; Perth UFO Research Group; Queensland Flying Saucer Research Bureau; UFO Research Queensland.

The search may take several months, and we await the results, if any, with interest.

RAAF file summaries:

Attached to this Newsletter you will find summaries of files:

 580/1/1 Part 4     Attachment two

580/1/1 Part 9     Attachment three

580/1/1 Part 10.  Attachment four.

580/1/1 Part 4 covers the period 1963-1965. This is the era of a number of classic Australian UFO cases. On this part will be found what the RAAF knew about the (1964 and 1965) Nebo, (1965) Eton Ridge and (1963) Willow Grove (Moe) events.

580/1/1 Part 10, covers part of 1968 and includes:

  • A photograph of the “mystery sphere” found at Inkerman Station, Queensland. A list of the names of men featured in one photograph shows one was a United States Navy Lt Commander. The reason for his attendance is not stated
  • The detailed story of the 22 Aug 1968 Zanthus aircrew observation of a cigar shaped UFO and six small discs over Western Australia. Interestingly the RAAF’s own summary of reports and proposed explanations fails to mention this spectacular event
  • A relatively unknown case from Darwin involving a radar visual observation by a Royal Air Force crew. The RAAF stated the event involved an “unidentified aircraft.”

RAAF UFO reports listing:

Following on from previous publication of RAAF UFO reports found on 580/1/1 Parts 1,2 &3; attached to this Newsletter are UFO reports found on 114/1/197; and 580/1/1 parts 9 &10 (attachments five, six and seven).

South Australian Police Department:

Newsletter four also advised that we had submitted a request under the South Australian Freedom of Information Act to the South Australian Police. We forwarded them a multi-page listing of South Australian UFO reports which had either been reported to the Police or where Police officers were direct witnesses and asked them for:

·      Copies of any Police documents relating to any of the 16 instances which fall within the date range of the FOI Act

·      Copies of any other documents which are held by the SA Police relating to either reports of UFOs, or internal policy on how to deal with such reports, which fall within the date range of the FOI Act.

A response was recently received and the full correspondence and listing of cases has been posted at http://disclosure.freewebpage.org. Hard copies will be despatched to liaison officers who do not have an e-mail address.

Revelations:

Volume 7 number 4 of the “Australasian UFOlogist” pages 28-31 contains the first “Revelations” column. This column is aimed at keeping the magazine’s readers up to date with the Disclosure Australia Project’s activities.

Website:

The Disclosure Australia web site is being upgraded as follows:

  • “What’s New” will contain only the latest edition of the Newsletter
  • Previous Newsletters will be found via an archive link
  • An area will be established containing:
    • Summaries of files
    • Listings of UFO reports found on file.

Web site archives:

We are currently looking for any material which might exist, on the following cases. If you have any such material, particularly original documentation, we’d appreciate hearing from you. Please do not assume someone else will share it with us.
