DECEMBER 1997 EAST KANGAROO ISLAND (WEST OF FLINDERS ISLAND), TAS 2230hrs (NL)
(Source: TUFOIC Newsletter October 1997 Edition 82)
Mr W has reported sighting an erratic light whilst his yacht was anchored off East Kangaroo Island west of Flinders Island. Mr W writes that they anchored just on dusk and they went down in the cabin to make dinner. Mr W left the cabin and sat in the cockpit, shutting the companionway doors to exclude any light. After a short time he noticed what looked like a star which had moved relative to it's surrounding stars. This moving star was on a straight flight path from east to west and he assumed it was a satellite. The light then abruptly changed course to perform a series of zig-zag movements. Then the light accelerated in a straight line towards the southern horizon having changed from its westerly path. It was travelling so fast as it neared the horizon that it just became a continuos steak of light. The whole event was over in 30 seconds.

Just south of Pt Stanvac oil refinery a glowing object was seen to descend at approx 170 knots at an initial angle of approx 60 degrees then correcting to 30 degrees where it disappeared behind buildings at an approximate height of 300 feet above ground level. The estimated compass heading of the objects decent was 010 degrees. There was no trail left by the object and no sound was evident. The light intensity was constant during the event. Witness observed an object larger than a 747 Jumbo in the northwest. When it crossed in front of the moon, the object resembled a shadow, the moonlight dimmed. The object had three white lights at the rear and one at the front. The lights were visible for the whole duration of the sighting (three minutes). It kept a constant speed and traveled in an arc until it was 90 degrees vertical and traveled upward until it went out of sight. When the object was closest to the observer, he could hear a low frequency hum. VUFORS
